Ken McElrath:В Skuid is a cloud UX platform that allows users to join disparate data sources from nearly any enterprise software platform, quickly assemble bespoke applications, and deploy an easy-to-use interface on any device - all without writing a single line of code. Your company allows users to create custom enterprise apps without using any code- can you describe your software and how the development process works? We could then leverage our early successes with even larger customers, to the point where now we routinely work with Fortune 100 companies. Thankfully, we had some early-adopter customers who put their faith in us and this yielded huge mutual benefits.

Skuid is an enterprise-class solution, but large enterprises rarely roll the dice on brand new technology. Our biggest problem was our status as a startup. I kept my day job as a professor until we closed enough deals to pay the salaries of a few more people. This enabled me to keep our three engineers employed while we tried to close some deals. I had a friendly angel investor who gave us $125,000 to launch the company. Ken McElrath:В Well, we had no money at first, other than hip-pocket capital. What were some of the notable challenges you faced getting your company off the ground? We wanted to make it possible to create extremely powerful apps that our customers could infinitely customize on their own, without writing code.

Those customizations required code and none of our customers had the time or budget for code. Customers wanted to add data from other sources and create completely bespoke processes, functions, and branding. They wanted a simpler, more elegant interface that would feel the same as apps they used every day on tablets and smartphones. But instead, our customers demanded much more. We figured that our customers would appreciate the ability to do some simple customizations on their own. We built the application on a cloud infrastructure that included a standard user interface (UI) with some basic customization tools. Ken McElrath: At my previous company, we built a comprehensive, enterprise cloud application for educators with award-winning functions and features. What specific void or opportunity did you discover that inspired the idea for Skuid?
